Appeal for the Affected in Tamil Nadu

Tamil-Nadu-Flood-Relief

Show your solidarity with the people of Tamil Nadu, the victims of flood, who’ve been torn apart…

Heavy rains pounded Tamil Nadu since November 2015, increasing the water level in all lakes and ponds and flooding the entire capital city of Chennai and the adjoining areas. Incidents of cloudburst, landslides and flash flood at various locations, triggered by heavier-than-usual monsoon rains, have led to a massive loss of lives, property and infrastructure. The havoc caused by the monsoon has set the development of Tamil Nadu back by a decade.

With residents stranded without adequate food, water and shelter, SCAD’s focused strategy is to the run to the aid of the locals in the flood hit areas whose life has been/will be irrevocably changed by the destruction in Tamil Nadu.
While some families have lost their main bread winners, some others have lost the very livelihood that has been sustaining them for years together. It has been reported that more than 2,000 villages in and around Chennai, Chengalpattu and coastal areas of Cuddalore, Pondicherry, Tuticorin districts have been totally or partially affected by the devastating flash floods and around 300 people in Chennai and adjoining villages have died while at least 2,000 are missing.

Horrific destruction in Tamil Nadu will greatly affect both the the agriculture and industrial sectors. Washing away of agricultural land and suspension of industries for the next few months is sure to impact the lives of those dependent on these sectors for their livelihood. Therefore in addition to providing support to immediate and short-term disaster relief, it is equally important to be focused on the longer-term rehabilitation process, as well

In the last 31 years, SCAD has worked extensively on relief and rehabilitation in a series of disasters. This is an URGENT APPEAL to join SCAD in its campaign ‘TAMILNADU FLOODS’ to provide support. The situation is alarming and millions of people are affected by the devastation.

The first truck load of relief material is starting today while the relief efforts will continue for the next few months.

Another major need is Medicines and conducting Medical camps, Cleaning and repairing of damaged houses.

Logistical support- transport – to carry material from SCAD offices to new hubs in the areas and vice versa.
