At SCAD Cheranmadevi campus, we’ve taken an innovative approach to address the dual challenges of waste biomass disposal and soil enrichment. Our Biochar unit is a testament to our commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.
In rural areas, after the harvesting season, farmers often face the dilemma of what to do with the leftover biomass. While some of it is used as cattle feed, much of it is traditionally burned in the fields. This practice not only pollutes the air but also contributes to the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, exacerbating environmental challenges.
SCAD introduced a sustainable solution to this problem by employing simple yet reliable devices like ANILA stoves. These stoves are designed to convert biomass into biochar through low-temperature incineration. The biochar produced during cooking serves a dual purpose: it can be used for cooking and can also generate income when sold.
The real magic of biochar lies in its potential to enrich soil. Biochar is a carbon-rich byproduct of biomass incineration. When mixed with natural manure, such as cow dung, it becomes an invaluable soil conditioner and natural fertilizer. The biochar helps improve soil structure, retain moisture, and enhance nutrient availability to plants, ultimately leading to increased agricultural productivity.
The use of ANILA stoves and biochar production creates a win-win situation. It addresses the problem of biomass waste disposal, reduces air pollution, and provides an additional source of income for families. Simultaneously, it contributes to sustainable farming practices by enriching the soil and improving crop yields.
We invite you to join us in our mission to promote sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation through initiatives like biochar production. By supporting SCAD, you’re not just contributing to environmental sustainability; you’re also helping rural communities build a more resilient and prosperous future.
If you’re interested in partnering with us, adopting similar practices, or contributing to our sustainability initiatives, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your support can help us continue our vital work in promoting sustainable agriculture and mitigating environmental challenges.
At SCAD, we believe that true change begins with innovative solutions and responsible environmental practices. Development is most impactful when compassionate hearts and dedicated hands come together. Join us in our mission to create a world where sustainable agriculture is the norm, and together, we can make a lasting difference for the environment and rural communities.
