You are here: Home » What We Do » Health » Mothers and babies
Mothers and babies are at risk in rural villages. Hospitals and healthcare are limited if you live in remote parts of southern Tamil Nadu. Many of these health related problems are due to vitamin deficiency, lack of nutritious food and poor personal and environmental hygiene.
Our health team work in tandem with the women’s groups in every village to identify and support mothers and young babies. Pregnant women are given immunisation to try to prevent common childhood disabilities like polio. Newborn babies are vaccinated to prevent common childhood diseases.
This has helped to reduce the incidence of infantile deaths from 30 per 1,000 in 1988 to 2 per 1000 in 2010 in the region since SCAD’s operation.
